<image:title>Blog - Why Tree Problems Show Up in March After a Mild or Icy Winter - Freeze and Thaw Cycles Affect Roots</image:title>
<image:caption>Tree problems do not always start above ground. Winter freeze and thaw cycles can shift soil, destabilize root systems, and reduce anchoring strength. Signs of root damage that appear in March include: Leaning trees Cracked or heaving soil near the base Mushrooms or fungal growth Sudden canopy thinning Roots are responsible for water and nutrient uptake. When roots are compromised, the entire tree becomes less stable and more vulnerable to failure. Internal Decay Becomes Noticeable in Spring Decay often develops slowly and invisibly inside a tree. Winter stress accelerates this process, especially in older trees or species common in North Georgia such as pine, oak, and maple. By March, homeowners may notice: Soft or hollow areas in the trunk Bark peeling or separating Dead limbs that did not drop earlier Reduced leaf development on one side of the tree What looks like a spring issue is often the result of winter damage that weakened the tree from the inside out.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Here’s Why We Love Wood Chips And Why You And Your Yard Should Too</image:title>
<image:caption>Wood Chips vs. Store-Bought Mulch: There’s No Comparison Not all mulch is created equal. That bag of mulch you grab from the store may look nice at first glance — but what’s inside isn’t always as natural as it seems. Many store-bought mulches are dyed, chemically treated, or made from recycled construction debris, pallets, or even pressure-treated lumber. At LS Trees, our wood chips come straight from the source - local trees trimmed, pruned, or removed across North Georgia. Every chip is 100% natural and untreated, made right here in our community. That means: ✅ No artificial dyes ✅ No chemicals ✅ No harmful additives Just pure, organic material that benefits both your property and the planet. As these wood chips slowly decompose, they add nutrients back into the soil, protect your tree roots, and help your yard thrive through every season.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In Cumming, hurricane season often brings heavy rain, gusty winds, and saturated soil, all of which increase the risk of tree failure. Fall is the ideal time to schedule a tree safety inspection to get ahead of potential hazards. Here’s what local homeowners can do to protect their property: Schedule seasonal inspections with LS Trees before the next major storm. Remove dead or weak branches before they fall. Prune trees to improve wind resistance and canopy balance. Ensure proper drainage around roots to prevent erosion. Keep emergency contact info for your local tree service handy.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blog - Stump Grinding in North Georgia: Why Leaving a Stump Behind Can Cost You More Than You Think - ⚠️ Hidden Dangers of Ignoring Tree Stumps Tree stumps and storm-damaged trees aren’t harmless. Over time, they can create a chain reaction of problems. Here’s what we see most often around Dawsonville, Gainesville, and surrounding North Georgia properties: Storm-Damaged Trees: After heavy rain or wind, cracked trunks and shallow roots can send dead trees toppling. Rotting Stumps: Over time, decayed stumps soften and collapse, creating uneven, unsafe ground. Pest Pathways: Rodents and insects often move from rotting wood directly into nearby homes or sheds. Drainage Issues: Old root systems can interfere with soil grading and water flow, leading to pooling or erosion. When in doubt, let a professional assess it - before small issues turn into bigger ones. Emergency Tree and Stump Services in North Georgia When storms hit, damage happens fast. If a stump becomes unstable or a tree falls, our LS Trees emergency response team is ready to act - quickly and safely. Our emergency services include: 24/7 tree removal and stump grinding Storm debris cleanup and hauling Hazard tree assessments Property protection plans Root and erosion control We often provide same-day or next-day service depending on severity and location.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Tree Trimming vs. Tree Pruning vs. Tree Removal: Cumming, GA Homeowner’s Guide - What is Tree Pruning? Pruning is about tree health and longevity, not just appearance. This service removes dead, diseased, or rubbing branches that compromise the tree’s structure. Benefits of pruning include: ️ Better airflow & sunlight penetration for healthier growth. ️ Lower disease and pest risk by removing weak or infected limbs. Stronger structure so trees can withstand storms and heavy rain. Think of pruning as preventative care, like a checkup for your trees. It helps reduce the chance of branches snapping during a summer thunderstorm and keeps your trees thriving for years. When to Prune: Late winter or early spring is ideal for most species in North Georgia. For trees with active disease, such as oaks with fungal infections, prompt pruning prevents further spread.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - Is Your Property Hurricane Ready? Why Late Summer Is the Best Time for a Tree Assessment in North Georgia - A Wake-Up Call from Hurricane Helen Take last year’s Hurricane Helen as an example. What was expected to be a minor event quickly shifted course, bringing powerful winds, flash flooding, and tree damage to parts of North Georgia. In a matter of hours, what seemed like a distant coastal storm turned into a local disaster. We received dozens of emergency calls that week: trees on homes, blocked driveways, cracked trunks near barns and sheds. Many homeowners told us they wished they had scheduled an inspection sooner. Real Story: Emergency Removal Saves Milton Barn and Animals Earlier this year in Milton, GA, we responded to a call after a large pine was struck by lightning. It had cracked and was leaning toward a nearby barn with animals around it. The owner had planned to schedule a tree check but kept putting it off. We arrived the same afternoon, removed the compromised tree safely, and preserved both the structure and the animals. It was a close call and a perfect example of why waiting too long isn’t worth the risk.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How to Spot a Hazard: Signs Your Tree May Be a Safety Risk - Top Warning Signs Your Tree May Be a Safety Risk Many tree issues start below the surface, but here are key signs to look out for: Visible Leaning A tree that leans naturally can be okay, but if the lean worsens over time or shifts direction suddenly, it’s often a sign of compromised roots or an unstable base. Trees leaning more than 15 degrees should always be assessed by a professional. Cracks or Splits in the Trunk Vertical or horizontal cracks in the bark, especially deep ones, can indicate internal decay. If the trunk looks like it’s splitting or has soft, spongey bark, it may be nearing the point of failure. Mushrooms or Fungus at the Base Fungal growth at the base of a tree or around the roots often signals rot. It may mean the tree’s structural integrity is compromised, even if the canopy looks healthy. Dead or Hanging Limbs Large limbs that no longer produce leaves (especially high up) pose a danger, particularly in storms. They can snap without warning and fall on driveways, fences, roofs, or people. Shallow or Heaving Roots Roots that rise above ground or appear to “heave” the soil are signs the tree may not be anchored well. This makes it more likely to uproot in strong winds. Excessive Leaf Drop or Discoloration If your tree is dropping leaves out of season or turning color early, that could be a sign of stress, disease, or dehydration. It might also mean the tree is diverting energy away from dying areas to try and survive. Bark Peeling Off in Strips When bark begins falling off in chunks or strips, it’s a red flag. Trees rely on bark to protect themselves, and without it, pests and rot can enter quickly.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - The Cost of Cutting Corners: Why Hiring a Professional Tree Service Matters - It’s Not Just Tree Work, It’s Property Protection A tree might seem like a peaceful fixture in your yard, but if it’s diseased, leaning, or poorly trimmed, it becomes a risk. Every year, we receive calls from homeowners after severe weather hits, sometimes with fallen trees already on rooftops, cars, fences, or power lines. Why does this happen so often? Because many homeowners didn’t realize their tree was a problem or they hired someone who didn’t know how to properly assess it. That’s where a certified, professional tree service comes in. Real-Life Example: A Close Call in Milton, GA Earlier this summer, a homeowner in Milton reached out after a severe thunderstorm rolled through the area. Lightning had struck one of the larger trees in their backyard, causing a deep internal crack. The tree was now leaning toward a nearby barn that housed goats and two adorable pigs. They needed help fast and needed the job done with precision. We arrived on-site, assessed the situation, and brought in our climbing crew and specialty rigging equipment. Within a few hours, we had safely removed the compromised tree, preventing further damage and keeping the barn, and all the animals, completely safe. This is the kind of scenario where experience matters most.</image:title>

<image:title>Blog - How to Know If a Tree Is Dangerous and What to Do About It - Signs a Tree May Be a Danger to Your Property</image:title>
<image:caption>Here are some of the most common red flags we see in the field: Cracks or Splits in the Trunk These can signal structural instability, especially if the tree has been hit by lightning or exposed to strong wind. Leaning More Than Usual A slight lean isn’t always cause for concern, but if your tree starts leaning suddenly or dramatically, it could be a sign of root damage. Dead or Hanging Limbs Deadwood is unpredictable. A branch may look stable but come crashing down during the next storm or even a breezy day. Fungus at the Base Mushrooms, conks, or other fungi at the trunk’s base may indicate internal rot. Visible Root Damage or Soil Movement If roots are exposed, cracked, or lifting out of the ground, your tree could be at risk of falling. No Leaves on One Side A lack of foliage on one section could signal disease or trunk damage that's affecting nutrient flow.</image:caption>
